The Bottom of Hallownest
The Abyss represents the absolute lowest point of the map, situated directly underneath the Ancient Basin. This quiet, shadow-drenched area serves as the birthplace of the vessels, holding countless relics of the past. To explore this zone, players must prepare themselves for a long journey through the most challenging parts of the kingdom.Before you can step foot inside this dark realm, you must navigate through the decaying tunnels of the Ancient Basin. This neighboring sector contains unique hazards and tough enemies that guard the gateway down below. Getting familiar with the layout of these metallic corridors will make your descent much smoother.
Acquiring the King's Brand
The entrance to this dark zone is firmly locked by a heavy stone door that requires a specific royal symbol to open. To obtain this key item, you must travel to the far eastern edge of Hallownest and enter the Cast-Off Shell located in the Kingdom's Edge. There, you will face a fierce boss battle against Hornet to prove your worth.
Defeating Hornet in this snowy arena allows you to venture deeper into the shell to claim the King's Brand. Once this symbol is burned into your shell, the ancient gates scattered across the kingdom will react to your presence. With this mark secured, you can finally head back down to the Ancient Basin to claim your prize.
Opening the Gates to the Deep
With the royal mark in your possession, make your way to the very bottom of the Ancient Basin where the locked stone door stands. As you approach the threshold, the brand will glow brightly and permanently open the pathway forward. Descending past this gate will bring you directly into the cold expanse of the Abyss.
Upon entering the zone, you will notice a massive drop filled with the remains of discarded vessels. Navigating this vertical drop requires careful platforming, as mist and shadows rise to challenge your movement. Reaching the solid ground at the bottom will open up several crucial upgrade pathways.
Essential Upgrades Hidden in the Dark
The dark cavern holds incredibly powerful upgrades that completely transform your movement and combat capabilities. By traversing the sea of void to the far right, players can discover the lighthouse that helps illuminate a safe path across the liquid shadows. Beyond this obstacle lies the chamber containing the Shade Cloak, an upgrade that allows you to dash through enemy attacks safely.
Additionally, exploring the left side of the cavern leads to a hidden sub-area where players can upgrade their magic. By howling inside the ancient stone structure, your standard spell transforms into the devastating Abyss Shriek. This powerful blast deals massive damage upward, making it perfect for dealing with difficult aerial bosses.
